Yep, that time again. I know the gaming community traditionally pick a best game for 2024 but I like being different, so here we are. Let’s talk about the best game pickups of 2024.
God of Weapons
I always am on the lookout for new eoguelike titles, and this one sure has left an impression. Especially since it’s one I haven’t beaten and still actively give attention to. God of Weapons does it different from other games in the same genre, such as Army of Ruin or Monster Panic. You’re scaling a tower, and after each floor, you’re given the chance to upgrade your suitcase with more slots which you then fill with new Weapons or items if they will fit.
See, this game isn’t just a roguelike. it’s also somewhat of an inventory management, since you’ll have to think about what weapons you want. Do you choose a scythe that takes up four spaces or do you opt for two daggers instead? I enjoy how different this game is.
Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe
This is a remake of the Wii game with the same name. I did play that version but it’s been years ago. This has been a great addition to the Switch library and my collection. With co-op easier than before and levels having just the right amount of secrets to find, this game is worth grabbing and that’s why it’s here, on this list.
Class of ’09
I wasn’t too sure what I had gotten myself into when I bought this, but it delivered a lot of laughs and moments that I wasn’t quite expecting. This is a visual novel with a rollercoaster of emotions that includes sensitive topics. It gave me a lot of laughs and moments where I had to ask what the frick just happened.
I really don’t want to give too much away, as I feel this is one game truly better left to experience for oneself, but all I’ll say is that you need to be prepared. This game doesn’t hold back with mature content, topics, scenes and such.
Monster Panic
Anyone familiar with my tastes in games shouldn’t be surprised this made it on the list. I played the heck out of this one on my Switch, coming here to discuss how great the game is, then following with a review and I even discussed my favorite weapons and accessories. I still go back to play the PS5 version now and again when I’m between games.
If any of this confused you, well, this is another roguelike auto shooter that took the regular formula and threw a little wrench in it. When you upgrade a weapon, you actually chose from 3 options of what you wanted improved. For example, you could have the bomb deploy 4 bombs instead of 3 or expand the blast radius. It made strategizing fun depending on what level you’re currently on.
Ratchet & Clank Collection
I’ve always wanted to get this because it makes playing the series much easier. With this game, you get the first three original R&C titles that were on the PS2. All conveniently in one place.
20 Minutes Till Dawn
This is another roguelike that is in the same category of Vampire Survivors, Army of Ruin, etc. However, this plays just slightly different. Your weapon doesn’t always automatically fire. For example, if you’re using guns or a bow and arrow, you have to actually target yourself and hit a button to release fire. It’s pretty fun and the graphics are interesting. Everything is gray with a tinge of green.
Despite all of my experience with this genre, this is the one game that has stumped me. I’m still trying to get through the first level. I’ve made it about 13 out of the 20 minutes and always die. It gets crazy. If you are looking for another roguelike to try, give this a shot.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Playing this game again after so many years was really a blast. I had forgotten most of the levels, which made them feel fresh and I always did enjoy the helicopter suit. I got near the end of the game but haven’t fully completed it yet. Hopefully soon though, as there really isn’t much left.
Digimon World DS
I’ve always wanted this game for my collection and finally broke down and bought a copy. Though I actually bought the game and case and manual separately, as it ended up being cheaper that way. Although I didn’t get to spend as much time with this as I wanted, because of other games, it’s always there for me to grab and play now, which I’m very pleased with.
Astro Bot
Oh did I have a great time with this game. Even after writing an appreciation blog for it and also a review, I’m still down to talk about it. Astro Bot (paid link) was everything i wanted from a game in 2024. It was fun, had some challenges but maintained a nice, colorful variety of worlds to explore and also offered comedy relief on top of that. It’s a game that I surely hope we see more of, which they already are releasing DLC, but I would love to see another game in the somewhat near future.
Mario Party Jamboree
I always enjoy when a new (paid link) Mario Party game is announced, but I’m always just a tad skeptical as well. Not all of them have been great, although fun, but not great. The first two Switch titles began to set the formula right, but they were lacking boards, in my opinion, and they just weren’t quite there yet. However, this game is a different story.
I’ve talked about this one a fair bit in my review and then also discussing some of the best mini games, but I really can’t drive it home enough with just how great this game is. With all the different boards, both old and new mini games and all the other islands to play on. This game has it all.
Ys X: Nordics
Yeah it definitely has to be Ys. I waited a good while for this game to release and I am still having a blast with it. The story has my attention, the gameplay is fun and I do enjoy having a wider area to explore compared to Ys IX, which is still a good game and you should read my review for, but anyway. If you haven’t not tried (paid link) Ys X, then it is recommended to do so, ans you do not need to actually play any of the Ys games prior to another.
While the stories do tell the tales of the adventurer Adol Christian, they do not follow so closely together that playing them out of order will hinder your experience.
Orbital Bullet
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got into this game. I knew it was a rogurlike and I knew it was advertised as a 360 degree shooter. Well, it delivered on that and much more. This is a fast paced, think on your feet type of game that will kill you. Enemies will be coming from both sides, you’ll be jumping from one layer of that floor to the next to either avoid their fire or to get close enough to kill them.
Final Words
2024 gave me a lot of great games to play and so many that I hope to find time for next year if I didn’t get to explore them this year. I can already say that January is starting off great and I’m already looking forward to talking about those games well.
