Hello nerds of all ages, back again with a Army of Ruin review. This game is a roguelike game much like Vampire Survivors (check my review for that here) and one that I have had a lot of fun with lately. I’ve already discussed this one a bit in another blog about the genre, so go look at it too. Let’s get into this.

Gameplay

We might as well start with the biggest draw of the game and genre itself. How does the gameplay compare to others? Well, it covers all the basics.

Auto attacks

Options of new equipment or stronger gear upon leveling up

Weapons and trinkets

Of course, we can’t forget about the unlockables too, which include characters, weapons, trinkets and new areas.

There’s 5 different locations with 4 different difficulties, and then 5 levels of difficulties within each one of those. Those are called Ruin. You could start with Graveyard 1 and set it to max Ruin, making the difficulty spike from 1 skull to about 7.

Graphics

I don’t typically pay attention to these too much with these games or indie titles in general. However, coming from Vampire Survivors, the upgrade to 3D models is actually very nice and refreshing.

Music

Honestly this is another one of those titles that I typically listen to podcasts while I play, so I can’t even comment here.

Controls

These are honestly very simple, and mostly consists of running around with the left analog stick and pressing A to confirm.

Replayability

This is where a lot of games in this genre fair very well. You can easily spend hours and hours with them, and still have more to unlock. At least, I can anyway.

I think the biggest draw for this game is that there are a lot of challenges involved. So you could spend a good deal of play time within a certain location on a Ruin level trying to survive to get a new character or something along those lines. There is also the money factor, as completing stages nets you so much coin to upgrade different stats and such.

Score:

Gameplay: 9/10

Graphics: 7/10

Music: N/A

Controls: 7/10

Replayability: 10/10

Overall:

Final Words

Although these games might not be for everyone, if you do already have an interest in the genre, this is a must-have, in my opinion. It’s also quite cheap. You can grab it for $7.99 on Steam, PS4, PS5 and the Nintendo Switch.

If you are looking for other games similar, I’ve got a recommendation list right here.
