Oh it’s finally happening, I have beaten an RPG and now I get to have the fun of reviewing it. Which game? Well, you can tell by the title, but today we have a Digimon World Next Order review! This title released in 2017 in the States, and acted as a sequel to the 1999 original Digimon World game on the PS1. I have plenty to say, so let’s hop in.

Story

Just as the original, the player is brought to the Digital World via a toy Digivice they had. Upon landing, they’re faced with a Machinedramaon, and also, they’re partners who have shown up to help. After the first battle, we’re brought in front of Jijimon and that’s where the real adventure begins.

A new threat has come down on the Digital World, and now we have to help rebuild the city, and stop whatever is looming. Along the way, we’ll encounter a few other humans, and come together to help the cause. I won’t go any further, since spoilers, but the story is overall decent, and there’s even a surprise from the first Digimon World title that I really enjoyed.

Gameplay

This doesn’t differ too much from the original game, as you’ll be traveling across the Digital World recruiting new residents to the city and also pushing the story forward. The flip side to this is your Digimon partners who you’ll be taking care of in the meantime as you do that. They’ll need to be fed, given potty breaks, and also have their energy monitored to ensure they stay alive as long as possible.

You’ll have your Digimon Digivolve based on their stats and how many victories they’ve had in battle. I’ve explained a bit more about battle in my tip blog, so maybe look at that.

Music

I have to give it to the composers. The music for this game is pretty cool, and I find myself humming it. It’s best if you guys give it a listen for yourselves.

Graphics

For a game released in 2017, I think the graphics are alright. They aren’t particularly special, but the game has some nice scenery, and the 3D models for each Digimon are done well. Even the animations for the attacks are decent.

Controls

These aren’t anything particularly fancy, but they get the job done. Most of it is just walking around, hitting X to confirm commands during battles, and also interact with Digimon and objects in the game.

Replayability

There’s definitely a lot of this to be found. I’m currently 55 hours into the game, with more post game content to work with. This means you could start fresh and do it all over again, a bit differently than last time and also get different Digimon than you did your first run.

Scores

Story: 7/10

Gameplay: 7/10

Music: 7/10

Graphics: 7/10

Controls: 7/10

Replayability: 8/10

Final Words

Although Digimon games have never really been an easy access point for new people, this is a decent game for fans of the series. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it, exploring the Digital World, and seeing all the different Digimon. The story is very similar to that of the first game, although I never finished that one. It lacks some originality, but if you look at it as a sequel, it’s pretty nice.

It’s important to note that you don’t have to play the original game to understand Digimon World Next Order. It might help understand some story bits, but overall it’s comprehensive without. If you’re a Digimon fan and haven’t played this game, I recommend at least giving it a try. The (paid link) Nintendo Switch version did just release as well, if that’s of interest.

Now, I’m back tracking to the OG and playing through it. I’ll give a review sometime down the road, but until the next blog, game on.

If you’re looking for your next adventure, I recommend checking out (paid link) Digimon Survive. I wrote a review for it just recently and also some tips as well.
