Well, as if I didn’t just discuss this game, here’s more. This time though, we’ll give Monster Panic a proper review. Let’s get started.

Gameplay

I feel a bit like a broken record when I review auto shooters, because we all know the gameplay is around the same, so what can I say that makes this game different than games such Vampire Survivors, Army you Ruin, Cat Survivors or any others I’ve already mentioned. Well, I can’t. The gameplay is more or less the same…but there are some differences worth mentioning.

Stages are around 13 minutes long. At 13, the boss appears, and you have to defeat it. The level ups to your weapons offer a different experience. Upon choosing a weapon, you’ll get three options on how you wish to level it. Would you like your bomb to have a range increase of 20% or 5 more damage? Each weapon comes with different options like the one I’ve mentioned, so you can find a balance that works for you per each level.

Each level of a stage has different mechanics as well. For instance, one level could give enemies 100X more health while the next will make you three times as big as usual. It keeps it fresh and interesting to say the least.

Outside of doing the levels and runs, you’ll be given a simple hub area. This is where you’ll be selecting one of the six characters, whom you’ll have to unlock all but one by purchasing them. You’ll also be able to purchase upgrades to your overall stats and equipment, such as increasing your natural EXP gain or weapon cool down rate. This is all done with coins, which you get within the levels but also as a reward for how you do each run.

Graphics

These are actually not too bad. They aren’t as good as Army of Ruin’s, but they have a charm about them somehow.

Music

So this is another situation where I typically drown it out with either music or a podcast, but I actually made a point to play with the sound on this time. It didn’t take too long to remember why I don’t though. It’s nice for a minute, but the constant sounds of your weapons hitting an enemy or experience being picked up or any other usual sounds a game makes when an action is made gets heavily annoying to me. Are they nice if you can stand them? Sure, but I can’t, so I opt for other forms of sounds while playing.

Controls

These are the same as any other roguelike in the auto shooter genre. Just walk around and select upgrades when needed.

Replayability

Some games I could see myself playing through again and some I simply can’t, and unfortunately for Monster Panic, I don’t think I would ever wish to go through it again. It isn’t bad, but after so long, it all feels the same. There isn’t really any real growth that I would say Army of Ruin has nor a ton of characters nor weapons like Vampire Survivors. This falls in the same category as Cat Survivors.

Score

Gameplay: 8/10

Graphics: 7/10

Music: 6/10

Controls: 6/10

Replayability: 7/10

Overall:

Conclusion

While Monster Panic may not be the best auto shooter out there, I think it’s pretty solid. However, in my last blog, I talked about the price and how it was worth it. To be honest, I would like to recant that. It’s best to wait for a sale on this one. I got it for $9.49 (USD) and I think it’s better at a $7 cost, and I got it on sale too. The actual original cost is $11.99 and I wouldn’t pay that for it.

However, if you’re interested, then here is the eshop page.
