Hello all, a bit later to this review than I would have liked, but better late than never I suppose. Astro Bot released September 6th, and I’ve had a time with it. Was it a good time? Well, yes, but let’s break this game down and talk about it in detail. I’ve already made a blog discussing why I love this (paid link) game, so check into that.
Story
Astro and all his friends are just enjoying a trip through space when suddenly an alien destroys their ship and scatters everyone everywhere. Upon landing on a desolate planet, they find the main section of their ship, which is a PS5 system by the way, and thus begins the adventure to find the missing parts and also rescue all of your friends.
Gameplay
This is a 3D platformer where you make your way through each level, rescuing the lost bots, collecting puzzle pieces and sometimes even finding secret exits. Each level feels unique and fresh, with some offering different mechanics to make it to the end. Such as giving Astro a metal suit to turn into a metal ball that can be used to break certain obstacles and solve puzzles.
Each Galaxy you visit has a boss, and after beating that boss, you rescue a distinct mascot which allows you entry into the last level of that galaxy which is that character’s world. an example of this would be rescuing Kratos and his boy, which then lets you play a level modeled after 2018’s God of War’s world. Oh, and to top it off? The character gives you something that makes Astro transform into them for a short time, which allows use of their item. For example, Kratos’ axe, which you can throw and freeze water, and also defeat enemies.
Soundtrack
This game has an amazing soundtrack. Each level delivers a catchy tune that just works with the environment, and doesn’t get monotonous to listen to as you play. With one of my favorite soundtracks being the spooky level.
Graphics
Astro Bot benefits from the PS5’s graphical updates over the last fully fledged Astro Bot game, (paid link) Rescue Mission, which was a (paid link) PS4 PSVR title. Although they may not be overly flashy, since this isn’t really a game that requires the PS5’s full graphical capabilities. It doesn’t stop the game from delivering some very beautiful scenery within each level, and admiring what the development team created though.
Controls
The controls for this game are spot on, and I had no gripe with them whatsoever. The gyro controls used were amazing, and were fun. The fact you could tilt your controller to move your spaceship about made it much more interactive than if they had just used the analog stick. It is also worth mentioning that the different noises and feel of the ground beneath Astro’s feet made it all the more special.
Overall, it makes great use of the controller.
Replayability
This game benefits from all it has done, and makes for a title that will be easy to visit again in the future, even after you’ve gotten all the bots rescued in your first file. The levels are just that fun and different enough to not feel repetitive.
Scores:
Gameplay: 10/10
Soundtrack: 10/10
Graphics: 10/10
Controls: 10/10
Replayability: 10/10

Conclusion
This game is everything I’ve been searching for. It’s answered the itch for just a casual, fun and addictive game. Something I could sit down and play for a level or two, but equally could play a whole galaxy in one sitting. Astro Bot is such a gem, and I hope we see much more of him in the future.
