DreadOut is a 2014 Indoneisan horror title that has resemblance to a different horror series, Fatal Frame. Thanks to my Steam Deck, I finally got the chance to sit down with this little gem and explore its wonders. What did I discover?
First of all, the ghosts in this game are actually pretty awesome and can be a pain to beat. Some due to just pure toughness, others because of their puzzles. One of the first ones to come to mind is the old woman you meet in the school’s hallways. You actually have to stun her, run around, and then get a picture of her back. If you don’t, then your photos aren’t actually doing any damage. Other ghosts have little tricks like this or some other way that prevents them from taking damage until you do something similar.
Aside from the obvious ghost exercising, there’s plenty of other puzzles to deal with, and creepy locations to boot. From the school to the town and even a mansion, the three acts of this game give you plenty of interesting sites.
Furthermore, it is the story that gets to me. Who is this Lady in Red, and why is she so interested in Linda? Mysteries to unfold as you guide her through the terrors of the night, watching her friends die one by one.

This game is fully playable on the Steam Deck. It is marked as Unknown currently, but I promise it is capable. The controls can be customized to fit your personalized liking as well.
Conclusion
For anyone who wants a game with interesting puzzles, some scary ghosts and a nice spooky atmosphere, this game definitely has you covered. It is only available via Steam, so keep that in mind. Overall, while it may not be as free roaming as the Fatal Frame series, DreadOut has its own unique identity, and that’s worth exploring.
