Zombie Survivors Review

We all know by now that I’m a sucker for bullethell roguelike games, so here I am again with another. Zombie Survivors sticks with the general formula but changes it up a little. How does it work exactly and does it meet expectations? Let’s discuss.

Gameplay

If you’ve played a roguelike bullethell before, such as Army of Ruin, Vampire Survivors or Monster Panic, then you already know what to expect. You’ll have to survive hordes of enemies while killing them with whatever weapons you can obtain through level ups and upgrades. This is true for Zombie Survivors, and luckily for it, the game scratches that addictive gameplay that helps push the genre.

This game differs from others in the genre, slightly, by how you get upgrades. There are jewels found by defeating enemies that you use to upgrade your overall strength, health and other stats. However, to even begin upgrading, you must collect cards. Cards are gotten by defeating bosses. So, you start the game unable to upgrade any of your base stats. I personally enjoyed this mechanic, and I still haven’t unlocked all the cards despite being on the final level.

I do have a few gripes about the game though. Nowhere does it show what weapons you have or accessories. This itself isn’t exactly a problem, but it makes me question if there’s a limit to how many you can hold and if so, what is it? There’s also the lack of weapons hitting their max level. I’ve gotten to level 10 with a couple of them, but I have no clue if that’s the limit and if it was, then there’s no special for hitting it.

Graphics

These aren’t particularly anything special, but i do actually like them. The sprites are small and there’s plenty that can fit on the screen. However, this results in some issues. The game does not handle too much on the screen at one time and begins to glitch out. This has even resulted in the game crashing during a run.

Soundtrack

The music in this game isn’t bad, but it isn’t special either. It’s just there, and it does its job. Ive definitely heard worse, so it’s a fair soundtrack.

Controls

These are like every other roguelike bullethell out there. It automatically attacks the enemy. All we do is press a button to confirm upgrade selections and menu options.

Replayability

I would say this game has a moderate replayability status. It’s pretty fun. I definitely could see coming back to it, and I enjoyed my time. Now, if only they would fix their bugs and add a HUD to see what weapons you have, etc.

Scores

Gameplay: 6/10

Graphics: 6/10

Soundtrack: 6/10

Controls: 6/10

Replayability: 6/10

Overall:

Conclusion

Zombie Survivors may not be the best of best in the roguelike bullethell genre, but it definitely can deliver a fun time. with it costing only a few dollars and providing at least 5 hours of playtime, I find it worth the time.
