We all should know by now how much I enjoy Vampire Survivors, but there’s also games in the same genre that do not get the same recognition, and it is time to change that. So today, we’ll be going over games like Vampire Survivors.
As always, be sure to check out my review for Vampire Survivors itself, and my co-op review too if that is of interest.
Let’s get started.
Army of Ruin

The gameplay is pretty much the same, with level ups offering different weapon picks, but the way the game takes a different turn is through the waves and stages. Each stage has four different levels, so to say, and each level has a different amount of waves you’ll have to survive and an increased difficulty.
As you finish levels, you’ll collect money, and that money can be used to increase your overall damage, weapon speed, your max health and a variety of other traits as well. I’ve been playing for over 25 hours (according to my Switch) and I’ve only unlocked maybe half of everything. This includes chatacters, weapons, trinkets, and other game mechanics.
Trinkets are what would be the equivalent of equipment in Vampire Survivors, like the Attractorb.
Halftime Heroes

This was a more recent find for myself, and at first, it struck me as a bit different, but it grew on me. There’s the usual money earned to level up your starting HP, EXP and overall stats, but there’s more to it than that. You don’t automatically choose a weapon upgrade upon leveling, you actually just gain a spell point, and also stat points. Then you can use them by hitting Y to choose your spell and stat upgrades.
Whispike Survivors

This one is a bit odd, and I haven’t figured out how I feel about it quite yet. You start off with a plant, and a single attack. As you level, you’re given choices of what to upgrade or add to your arsenal, much like the games mentioned above. When you die, you’re given a seed that might carry some of the attacks that your plant just did.
You’ll have to plant the seed and either wait for it to grow or use manure to speed the process up. When it’s grown, use it during your next run and see how far you’ll get. Honestly, it’s a neat idea, but I’m not overjoyed with it.
Even for the genre it is in, it gets repetitive pretty quickly.
Conclusion
While there are more games in this genre that I have not played, I feel these are enough to scratch that itch if you’re looking for something similar. As I quite enjoy this genre, expect a part 2 to games like Vampire Survivors.
I actually do have an updated list that can be found here.
