We all know what time of the month it is. Oh yes…bills are due!! Okay, not really (maybe?) but no, we have new games to discuss! Let’s hop into my May 23 Game Pickups.
PS2

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim
I recently got more into the Ys series more recently, after hopping back onto Ys VIII and spending roughly 20 hours on it now. I decided I wanted to backtrack and see Adol’s other adventures. I’m not going to be playing this one yet though.
PS5

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox
So when I bought this, I had planned on throwing it on the shelf until finishing (paid link) Ys VIII, but that didn’t happen. A few minutes of testing has now turned into 11 hours of playing. I’m currently on chapter 6, and I can definitely see improvement over the last game, while still keeping core mechanics in check.
I will be playing (paid link) this and Ys VIII simultaneously, so that should keep it fun for me. I’ll do a review on both games once I am done with them.
Afterimage
I got this because it looked like a fun side scrolling RPG, with lots of weapons and armor to choose from. However, I haven’t even been able to play. See, it took forever to even get it installed, and then it crashed about 2 minutes into the (paid link) game, so I haven’t been back since.
Trinity Trigger
I feel this is an interesting game for 2023. A JRPG with couch co-op for up to three players? Unheard of for me. I’m playing alone though, but still.
My favorite aspect so far, is the ability to change your weapon style on the fly. I don’t have too many available to me currently, but I have enjoyed the layer of strategy it offers. As for the story, three individuals are joined together in a goal to stop an ongoing war between two gods. That’s about sums it up without getting into details and offering spoilers.
If interested, maybe (paid link) get it for yourself, but check out a trailer or two first.
PSP

Ys 7
I know, I just was talking about two other Ys titles and here is the third. I don’t plan to play much of this one, because I think too much would cause burnout, but I did put about 30 minutes in, just to test it out and see how it looked on the system.
Switch

Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
I wasn’t sure I was going to even get this game. If you read my recent blog on my Switch Experience, I didn’t like Breath of the Wild very much. After so long, I just put it down and never went back.
Well after many videos popping up everywhere on the internet, I was persuaded. Thankfully, I love it. I’m still on the Sky Islands, but I feel as though they have served as a good introduction to the building system so far.
I’m eager to see more. If you haven’t picked up a (paid link) copy, you may want to, regardless if you like BotW or not.
Syndrome
I don’t typically buy non-first party games on the Switch, as where I just prefer to play on the more powerful systems, plus I usually only play in handheld mode.
Unfortunately this game demonstrates exactly why. Trying to play in handheld is very difficult, as the text is too small to even see what it says. I wish I had bought this on a different system, but alas, I’ll use dock mode if I seriously feel like playing.
Final Fantasy IV
I don’t own another copy of this game anywhere else. At one time, I owned 2 copies, and both sold both, so I was pretty happy to see that the Pixel Remasters could be bought separately.
I’ve only played over an hour at this point, because the other games got in my way, but I’m very happy to have this available to me. I did really enjoy what I did play, because it had been quite some time since I played a classic FF title.
Conclusion
This has been a good month of pickups. I’ve gotten 3 Ys games, which has officially locked me into loving the series. Tears of the Kingdom has been better than I anticipated, given my distaste towards Breath of the Wild. Trinity Trigger is a nice RPG to come back to later when I get through some other games.
I already am eyeing something doe June, but I won’t say anything about what it is. Also, make sure to check on my March and April pickups as well.
