So I recently posted a review for the book (paid link) Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes and I cannot get it out of my head just how similar it is to Dead Space 3. From the story to the setting, I had the game on my mind often while reading and I just had to come write about it. So, I plan to break down what the similarities are and where they fit in.
I will be covering some content that could be spoilers for people who aren’t familiar with both the game and the book in discussion, so be warned. I will try to keep it minimal as best I can. However, you’re responsible from this point forward.
Atmosphere & Location
First off is the atmosphere and location of the book itself. A planet with no life on it that some company wanted samples from. No documentations about it and what happened there. A frozen planet, mind you, much like Tau Volantis from Dead Space 3, which was also frozen and had no living human life to be found. There were harsh conditions for the people who did land there.
Story
I don’t want to give too much away in regards to either story here, but I think it’s important to cover how similar the two are in certain ways. Much like the alien artifacts and remains that told a story about people who came before and didn’t make it or species that didn’t.
The Lyrians from Ghost Station were a species on the planet whom didn’t make it through evolution. The aliens from Dead Space 3 had their own problems, which I won’t get into either to not spoil anymore than I already have.
It’s also worth noting that the characters in both Ghost Station and Dead Space have a tragic past of some sort that is intertwined into the story or is part of the story itself. The idea behind the world in Ghost Station is futuristic, like Dead Space, so there are similarities between talking about planets, areas of different ships mentioned and so forth.
Is S.A. Barnes a Dead Space Fan?
Who’s to say. I’m unsure but I also will me tonight that (paid link) Dead Silence did share a lot of similarities to the original Dead Space game. Though perhaps that’s an article for a different day. For now, I’m honestly really excited to read her newest book, (paid link) Cold Eternity.
Conclusion
It is probably a coincidence that her books have ties to the Dead Space series but it’s still something to really think about and have fun discussing. There is also the possibility that the Alien movies played a part in her writings too but I’m not familiar enough with them to tackle that subject.
With all of this said, I do think it’s possible she was inspired by sci-fi works such as Alien and Dead Space. So, take all of this with a grain of salt and just a fun thougb process. With that said, thanks for joining us on this little adventure and please, don’t turn off the lights.
