Ah yes, another S.A. Barnes review is coming your way. For what book this time? Cold Eternity. I was really feeling the mood after reading (paid link) Ghost Station and writing my review for it. Could this one top even that book? Let’s discuss.
Synopsis

The cryo program, created by trillionaire tech genius Zale Winfeld, is long defunct, and the AI hologram “hosts,” ghoulishly created in the likeness of Winfeld’s three adult children, are glitchy. The ship feels like a crypt, and the isolation gets to Halley almost immediately. She starts to see figures crawling in the hallways, and there’s a constant scraping, slithering, and rattling echoing in the vents.
It’s not long before Halley realizes she may have gotten herself trapped in an even more dangerous situation than the one she was running from….”

Thoughts
S.A. Barnes has a way of pulling you into the worlds she writes and even makes you wish you were living them, almost. The futuristic aspects of this specific novel painted a picture of space 200 years in the future, and in my opinion, a realistic one about corruption, overworked people and how life goes for everyone not on the top.
Halley, trying to escape her past life, finds herself on a ship full of dead people. I really felt like this novel did an excellent job at keeping the suspense while also allowing us to really connect with our main character and her struggles. Revealing just enough of her past to come through to understand her without unnecessary details that wouldn’t have been relevant.
The twists and surprises really show how different this book is from past reads of the author. There’s always been one aspect I really wanted from S.A. Barnes and she delivered it. I won’t spoil what that is, given that it’s a major story event.
Score:
This is a book you absolutely want to keep the lights on for, during and after you’re finished. As much as I loved Ghost Station, Cold Eternity tops it and I can’t wait to see what the next S.A. Barnes book will be.
