Well, I suppose it’s about time I actually get this Super Mario Wonder Switch 2 review done. I’ve been thinking about, putting it off, playing with Wonder Flowers, stomping on Goombas but now the time as come to discuss the game and put it down for a minute.

In all honesty, the game has been fun and a joy to revisit. I never did a review for the (paid link) Switch version but I dang sure was going to do a (paid link) Switch 2 version review. Let’s get this started!

Gameplay

Given that this game has both the main content we saw in the Switch plus added content, I’ve decided to split the two.

Main Game

We see a return of classic 2D Mario gameplay but with twists due to the Wonder Flowers. These changes the levels in different ways, such as making us ride a dragon, transforming the characters into different creatures to traverse the level and more. With that said, the game overall has the charm as any other 2D Mario title in the best ways. Fun puzzles, secret exits and challenges that will surely put you to the test. Across 7 different worlds and plenty of characters, now including Rosalina, to play as, the game is more fun than before.

Bellabel Park

This section adds some new levels, a bunch of mini games you can play with or against other people and also even a new power up. I was pleased with the mini games myself and spent a fair amount of time with those. I also was happy to see Toad so involved and made me incredibly curious if we will either see a new Captain Toad game or a Switch 2 version of the (paid link) Switch game. One aspect I also appreciated from the mini games were that some added mouse functionality.

Graphics

The graphics look more crisp than they did before with an upscaled resolution. Mario Wonder already looked really nice to me but now it’s even better. We now have 4K while docked and 1080 on handheld.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack is just as good as it was when the (paid link) Switch version released. The added sections deliver the same type of music and it goes along nicely. I have zero complaints and for a 2D Mario title, it has some of the best music in my opinion.

Controls

I’ve played mostly with my (paid link) JoyCons sideways as I’ve been playing multiplayer but the controls are pretty much the same as the original. Just as tight and responsive. One aspect I do want to note is that some of the minigames uses the mouse functionality and I thought that was very nicely implemented.

Replayability

As most Mario titles do, Mario Wonder has a lot of replay value and even more when you add BellaBel Park to the mixture. With so many minigames to play with or against your friends and family, as well as the Brigade Tents to keep you occupied after the main story and of course going to back to collect anything you missed. There’s so much replay value here that can keep you coming back for quite some time.

Conclusion

If you haven’t experienced Mario Wonder, now is a great time to do so. If you have already played the Switch version, now would be a great chance to replay the game with new content. Either way, I’m very happy with the money spent for the upgrade in my case and can’t wait to see what other games get this treatment. That’s it for this Super Mario Wonder Switch 2 review.

Check out my review for (paid link) Super Mario 3D World as well. As always, happy gaming!
