Ah, look at that. It’s time for yet another roguelike auto-shooter review. This one has been a few months in the making, dating back to even before the (paid link) Nintendo Switch 2‘s launch date. I’ve been playing this for a long time and finally, I’m ready to talk about it. Now, let’s cover this Monster Survivors review.

Gameplay

Monster Survivors plays like most roguelike auto-shooters out there, except it does some aspects differently. For example, you can level up your character, add accessories that give you benefits and also hatch eggs that give you creatures who do special skills or attacks during a run.

Otherwise, you are going through levels trying to survive, sometimes beating a boss at the end and then rinse and repeat. It can get a bit monotonous after a while so I recommend playing only for a session or two. The one mechanic I really like about this game is that you can actually close the game during a run, and it will ask if you want to resume it next time you go to play.

Unfortunately, the game stays around way too long in my opinion. Normally I want to see every detail I can or at least, a majority of it before I write a review. This time, I threw the towel in after 74 stages, not really seeing any end in sight even after maxing out my characters, enhancements and nearly all the equipment I had on. I’m not even sure if the game has an end but I won’t be sticking around any longer to find out. Especially since it has a bad habit of freezing up and shutting down unexpectedly.

Graphics

These are a step above some other autoshooters like Zombie Survivors, but not as great as Army of Ruin. I like them for what they are, for a while.

Soundtrack

This one isn’t that bad. I could actually manage to play this game for a run while the volume was turned up. Typically the soundtracks for autoshooters get on my nerves but this one didn’t. It isn’t anything to clap at but it’s decent.

Controls

These are alright and pretty simple overall. Just walk around while your weapons do the attacking, climb some walls, zip on zip lines and go about your business. Make selections with the A button and that about covers it. Nothing fancy but they do the job.

Replayability

Unfortunately, this game has done it self in for me. Given that I’m not even sure if there is an ending to it, I feel like the replay value is really low after you get all the upgrades and have had your fill of it.

Scores

Gameplay: 5/10

Graphics: 6/10

Soundtrack: 7/10

Controls: 7/10

Replayability: 3/10

Conclusion

While this may not be the best game, if you’re looking for one to just kill time, I think it’s worth it. Just know what you’re getting yourself into when you buy and expect to drop it at some point. If you want to check the game out, here it is.

If you’re looking for other roguelike games, check out this list that I created. Maybe you’ll find something there. As always, happy gaming.
