With the announcement of the Switch 2 being released sometime in 2025, I thought it would be a great time to discuss some Switch games that would be worth buying prior to release. Also, Shootout to our author Downs for his contribution. My sections will be marked red and his is green.

Mario Party Jamboree

This is the best (paid link) Mario Party they’ve released in years, in my opinion that is. With the new boards, mini games and a nice cast of characters, there’s plenty to do. You could play the traditional Mario Party game or do some of the other side areas. I talked about all this and more in my review.

Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

This was just released last year and I even showed it off in my October blog with the Switch Lite that was released alongside it. It’s a much simpler game than some of the other titles, but it has the same art style as (paid link) Link’s Awakening. Playing as Zelda was pretty cool and different. As far I can remember, this hasn’t happened since the CD-i days. I’ve never played that game, but it seemed it really sucked so don’t put yourself through the probable torture.

Go check this (paid link) game out with a trailer if you haven’t already.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

This was released at launch with the (paid link) Nintendo Switch back in 2017. It was a widely liked title that spawned a sequel, (paid link) Tears of the Kingdom. I personally passed on (paid link) Breath of the Wild, just because Zelda games are a hit or a miss for me. However, I see the appeal.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus

I cannot stress just how amazing this game is and why you should buy it. If you’re a fan of (paid link) Pokemon, it is an obvious choice. Taking place a good 100 years or so prior to the modern games we know of, we see our character transported back in time when Pokemon were wild and scary creatures that people feared. It also takes places where Shinnoh will be, but it is currently named Hitsui.

I’m currently playing through this game for a third time. Be on the lookout for a review and some other articles in the near future. For the time being, I recommend playing this prior to the release of Z-A, just to get a feel for the Legends titles.

Yoshi’s Crafted World

The last Yoshi game we received. It is about time we got another one but before we do, I say go out and play this! It’s colorful, fun, challenging and it has Yoshi. What more can one ask for? Being serious though, our chances of getting a new Yoshi title just increased with the Switch 2 being announced. It wouldn’t hurt to play the last entry and prepare for whatever is to come our way. Go do yourself a favor and get yourself a (paid link) copy now.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

I was very excited when I got this game. A new 3D (paid link) Kirby? Sign me up! This game delivered a very fun, colorful and different experience. Familiar powers and new were brought to the table and each level was a different experience filled with puzzles and adventure.

Metroid Dread

Metroid Dread (paid link) should be at the top on your list of must-play Nintendo Switch games. As a true Metroidvania, it’s a fantastic addition to any collection. It captures the speed and fluidity of Super Metroid while incorporating the innovations from the Samus Returns remake, offering the best of both worlds. With a playtime of around 6-8 hours, it’s the ideal length for its genre—fast-paced, engaging, and free of filler. The only downside is for completionists, as achieving 100% can feel tedious due to the game’s structure. However, backtracking in this game is nowhere near life sucking as other games in its genre. For a standard playthrough, it stands as one of the best games of the past decade. I can’t recommend it enough.

Super Mario Wonder

This is the latest 2D Mario adventure and what a fun one it is. I had a great time playing this with friends and family, and I think it’s worth a playthrough prior to the next release, whenever that may be. Go check out a trailer and consider getting your (paid link) copy today.

Super Mario Odyssey

Although this (paid link) game came out very early in the Switch’s life, I would say it is the right time to play it with the high probability that we should see a brand new 3D Mario title in the near future with the Switch 2 coming out sometime this year.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

I haven’t spent any time with (paid link) Fire Emblem: Engage so perhaps that game deserves to be here instead but I have no clue. Regardless, I personally found (paid link) Three Houses to be refreshing in story and gameplay. You become a teacher at a school and choose which house you’re in. That house will dictate what students you teach and also your units during battle.

Conclusion

With the Nintendo Switch 2 coming out in the near future, surely we’ll see more games from each of the series mentioned above. I’m quite looking forward to the release and I hope you all are as well. Stay tuned for more content.
