Light Brigade is one of those games that many may overlook due to being rogue-like, but they shouldn’t. Yes, you’ll have to start all over if you die, but there are rewards if you put the time in. We’ll be discussing just why you should jump on this one.

How Progression Works in Light Brigade

When someone hears the term rogue-like, they probably think of a game where you’re trying to get from start to finish, losing it all when you die and beginning anew. That definition isn’t totally wrong, but more modern games take a different approach to it.

There are certain collectibles, levels, tools or weapons to be obtained that are permanently there. For Light Brigade, those would be your class rank, and upgrades you’ve made. You’ll collect souls as you kill enemies, and at the end of every second area, you’ll be given the option to pour the souls into your class. This is essentially EXP, if that helps, and when you level, you get skill points. Those can be spent for permanent extra lives, upgraded guns or to even unlock a magic wand.

Classes

As you use your souls to gain ranks with the starting class, you’ll reach a point where you’ll unlock a new class, Scout. Then do the same with Scout, reach rank 5 to unlock the next. It continues that way, as far as I can tell, until all classes have been unlocked. I’ve got three to choose from currently.

Each class has a different magic wand. Some deal damage while other cam conjure shields. The weapons vary too, though there always seems to be a pistol. You have a different amount of ammo and item slots to use, which are found at your waist as an ammo belt.

Time Well Spent

I’ve spent a lot of time on this game so far, and even if sometimes it gets slightly repetitive, I still find value. I’ve reached the first boss, and lost. Unfortunately I’ve only made it there once, but I’ve been more focused on unlocking the other classes to see what is available.

Conclusion

If you like guns, progression, a story with some spiritual setting, and can be okay with dying, this game may be for you. If you have any interest in rogue-like games, I definitely recommend this one. At $24.99, I find this game to be worth every penny, and a great PSVR 2 title.
