Dead Space Remake Medium Difficulty Spike?

Is the Dead Space Remake difficulty too much? Upon receiving my game, I started on medium, and quickly found out this was a lot harder than I remember, Well, there’s a reason for that. Let’s get into it.

Looking Back at 2008’s Dead Space

Let’s start off this blog by going backwards a bit, to the 2008 (paid link) Dead Space, and my time with it. I’ve played that one numerous times over the years, 10+ times, and always on Medium or higher. Sure there were some hard moments, but I never felt like I was fighting to move forward. There was enough ammo and health packs to go about my business, and enough Power Nodes too. Enemies still gave a challenge, but it felt, well, like most games would on Medium difficulty.

Present Day

Like so many others, on the night of January 27th, I anxiously started the remake and set my difficulty to Medium. After about an hour or so, and getting into chapter 2, I was noticing that I wasn’t doing as well as I always had. Was it me? Had I just gotten bad at playing? A bit more time, and well, no, I hadn’t. The remake’s Medium difficulty actually is a lot tougher than the original. The entire time I played, I was constantly running out of, well, everything. My Ammo didn’t last long, Necromorphs took more shots to kill and my health drained too quickly.

So after getting into chapter 4, I had enough of it, and lowered my difficulty to easy to just enjoy the experience. One day I’ll try again, maybe, but for now, I’m having fun going down the path I am now. Power Nodes have been more common, I still get a challenge, but I feel there’s a chance now.

Too Difficult?

Given how much I struggled with Medium, I’m actually scared to see Impossible Mode. When I went into the game, I thought it would be no big deal, to get the platinum trophy, but I think this might be a game that I can’t get it in.

I’m all for a challenge, but I wonder if it’s been made too difficult. It was becoming frustrating, always getting by with the very bare minimum of supplies. Dead Space has always been a survival horror, but different than titles such as Resident Evil, where supplies were actually limited. It brings questions for the future of the series.

So, I’ll leave this piece off with a question. How many other OG Dead Space players noticed this spike and did it make a difference in how you continued playing the game?
