If you are not aware, Game Mill released a new Rudolph game last year. Yes, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer received another game apart from the (paid links) DS & Wii title. Well, how is it? Worth the money? It released for Steam, (paid links) Xbox Series X, Playstation 5 and the Nintendo Switch. Let’s go on a break this down.

Story

You know the story by now, don’t you? How the other Reindeer wouldn’t let Rudolph play any Reindeer games? Then he became a legend due to his nose. Well, the same story exists, more of less, here. Only they did a little tweaking, adding Clarice into the mix. She runs off with everyone. I thought it added a small twist to the story we all probably know by heart.

Gameplay

The gameplay consists of you acting out, playing, the story events of the Rudolph story. You’ll be doing missions, usually for Bells, which are collectibles. These missions can be as simple as finding items or they can be races or other activities. They also can be somewhat challenging, hard to find places and maybe a little annoying. I wouldn’t have much hope in a child finding joy in this given that I had issues with some of them.

The game can be played co-op with up to four players. We played with two, which did make for a fun time but it overall could have been handled better. If you couple a lot of annoying jumping areas with a poor camera, you get a very frustrating game loop of “I wish I could get out of here!” Which, is what happened.

Graphics

The graphics for Rudolph are alright. They aren’t special but the designs for everyone are at least decently done in my opinion. The landscapes are pretty but they also start to all look the same after some time.

Soundtrack

This is basically what you would expect, Christmas music. That isn’t a bad aspect though, because it really sets the mood and goes along with the theme. So, expected but not a downside.

Controls

These are unfortunately pretty bad. You can move around easily, more or less, and do jumps, dash, and even high jumps (though we didn’t know this until right at the end) but the camera is awful. It constantly zooms in on the character you’re playing and then even through him. You can lose track of yourself pretty easily and become disoriented.

Replayability

I would say there is some replayability in here. If you wish to go back and collect all the bells and ornaments that is. That’s not something we plan to do ourselves but some people very well may want to.

Scores

Story: 6/10

Gameplay: 5/10

Graphics: 5/10

Replayability: 5/10

Conclusion

If you’ve got a fan who really loves Christmas and Rudolph, then yes I would say ignore the faults and just have a grand time together. However, if you were looking to just play on your own, I would reconsider and find a different game to play. This one is better left played once and if you do want it, snag it for no more than $20.
