I think it’s about time to crank out an original Dead Space review. Given I have already done one for Dead Space 2 & Dead Space 3. I’m not sure what’s taken me so long, perhaps the Necromorphs got to me. Let’s get this started.

Story

Isaac Clarke goes on a repair mission for the USG Ishimura to meet up and also check on his girlfriend, Nicole. While there, himself, Kendra and Hammond realize something has gone very wrong when they’re attacked and separated by aliens. Thus begins to journey of getting off the ship and searching for clues as to what exactly happened. With twists and turns, an interesting story of Unitology at hand and the question about Isaac’s girlfriend, just what will happen?

Dead Space’s story and lore never quite bores me. It’s something I enjoy time and time again.

Gameplay

You control Isaac as he tries his best to survive the USG Ishimura. You’ll be shooting Necromorphs to their deaths, upgrading your weapons and suit while also working towards getting off the ship. The gameplay is fun and while not quite as polished as it’ sequel’s, it’s still solid.

Graphics

The graphics on the Steam Deck are smooth and easy to enjoy. I didn’t find any hiccups during my gameplay and it runs a mostly constant 50-60 fps, much unlike the remake that was all over the place.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack for this game is great! The creepy sounds as you make your way through, the inaudible words you hear in hushed whispers. Just enough to be there but not to make out. Dead Space has always had one of the best soundtracks for a horror game in my opinion.

Controls

The controls on the Steam Deck are easy and smooth. I didn’t notice any problems while playing and they’re solid across the board.

Replayability

Dead Space has a high replay value in terms of a good story, fun gameplay, an interesting and spooky atmosphere and just overall being a good game.

Scores

Story: 9/10

Gameplay: 8/10

Graphics: 8/10

Soundtrack: 9/10

Conclusion

The original Dead Space is still more than worth playing. Get yourself a copy on Steam (paid link) PS3 or the Xbox 360 and go have some fun. Of course (paid link) Dead Space Remake is available too, which I did a review for as well. Hope you enjoy your horrific journey, regardless of how you choose to play it.

Until next time, happy gaming.
