I finally played this game enough to write my House of the Dead Remake review. I know this is a remake of a classic, which I never played. Let’s get to it.

Gameplay

House of the Dead is an on rails shooter where all you have to worry about is aiming, firing and reloading. It’s basic in its works but can provide a challenge in terms of boss fights and when being surrounded by zombies. Your main goal is to rescue as many survivors as possible in each run as well as reach for a new high score.

The game comes in either the original mode or Horde, which equals more zombies. Depending on who you saved and how you do will depend if you opened anything after a run. It will keep you coming back to try again, despite its short play time.

Graphics

The remake has some decent graphics, certainly an improvement over the original but I don’t believe they are anything to really be impressed with. I do believe the zombies look nicely done but that’s about it for me. Overall, I believe them to be mediocre.

Soundtrack

I think the soundtrack is pretty cool and is fine for what it is. I can’t say it is anything special in my opinion, but it’s a good fit.

Controls

You can choose to play these as motion controls or standard. Personally, I did standard since I was in handheld. They were pretty decent, nothing crazy but they worked. I wasn’t too crazy about the motion controls, as they seemed to be all over the place and not very in line with where you moved the system.

Replayability

The game itself doesn’t take long to play. Less than an hour and you’ll see the story. However, what this game offers is what it offered in the original. A chance to play again and aim for a higher score than your previous as well as trying to save the survivors.

Scores

Gameplay: 7/10

Graphics: 6/10

Soundtrack: 6/10

Controls: 5/10

Replayability: 7/10

Conclusion

If you were a fan of the original or are looking for something simply to dive into for the first time, I think this is a solid choice. However, do as I did and wait for a sale as it was $2.49 (USD) for a good while. I would not be happy spending the full $24.99 for the amount of time I played this.

I also am aware I did not include the story for the game, as I believe it isn’t really clear as you play through. In my two times of playing the game, it felt more like a puzzle to figure the game out and I ended up just trying to shoot the zombies instead.
