Welcome all Nerds to a brand new year. 2023 saw a lot of great games release, and while some of those will be in this list, I’ll also be talking about games that released in past years that I’m just now getting into. So, let’s discuss the best Horror Games of 2023 that I played.

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse

I waited many years for this game, and it did not disappoint. Originally released in 2008 on the Wii in Japan, it took 15 years to be localized. What this game did was what Fatal Frame does well at. Placing females in weird haunted locations and having us struggle to get them out of it. Well, this game checks out, sending us to an island with a history bathed in blood.

The history of the island and the details of the characters are largely put together through the notes left behind. I think playing through this game twice is almost necessary if you want all the details.

Dead Space

This was a very anticipated release, my most for the entire year basically, because I am a huge fan of the series. This lived up to the hype and beyond. The way they transformed the Ishimura into one big play area made it all the more creepy. It left a very good impression for the series, and I hope we see a remake for the 2nd game.

Bit and pieces from the original had been changed, story details that I won’t spoil, but they were overall welcomed in my book. Also, this game is more difficult than the OG, forcing me to drop my difficulty to easy when I started on medium. I even wrote a whole blog discussing this. If you haven’t given this remake a chance, hop on over to (paid link) Amazon and grab you a copy!

I wrote a review for this one too, so look at that.

Suicide of Rachel Foster

It seems I bring this game up every chance I get, and for a very good reason. I slept on this game for too long, and I was missing out on one of the best experiences. Not only does this game offer a very engrossing and nail biting story, but the atmosphere is done so well that it had me sitting at the edge of my seat.

I never knew where the story was heading next nor did I know if I was truly alone. The game takes psychological horror seriously and does it in a beautiful way. I speak more about all of this and more in my review.

Haunting Ground

It’s been a year since I wrote my review for this game and also a year since I finished my very first playthrough. What a wild ride it was too. This game really pushed on topics that are not okay for today’s age, which I talked about in this blog, where I discussed how it would do in this modern gaming era.

This is also a game that I wouldn’t mind replaying sometime in the future, alongside with a guide because some parts of this game really are difficult and also incredibly clever. Actually, I used a guide the first time too for this reason.

If you haven’t given this game a chance, I think it’s more than worth it. At this point, it would be a cheaper option just to emulate it, although I did play it with my physical, which I still own.

Final Words

Although I didn’t play too many horror games in 2023, the ones I did left quite an impact. This is something I’d like to change in 2024 though, and actually come back next year with a longer list.

Until next time, peace out and happy scares everyone.
