Enter, if you dare, as we discuss Haunting Ground. A 2005 horror game by good ol’ Capcom. If you have played the game before, then let me gently remind you how disturbing this game is as we dive deeper into the question…could Haunting Ground survive in 2023?
The Themes
Regardless if you have or have not played, I’m going to throw the biggest issue out right away. The game is heavily sexually themed, with basically all the men wanting to do horrible activities to Fiona. The game even starts off with the first boss keeping her locked up, nude, in a small dog cage.
There’s also the guy who wants to impregnate her. This is even an ending, which I won’t spoil how to get, but yeah….It’s a disturbing time. The woman, who turns out to be a robot, is actually jealous of Fiona, and goes full psycho on her.

Fiona’s Helpless
This is very true though. She can hardly do anything but run away from her attacker. She does have Hewie, her faithful German Shepherd she befriends, who will attack enemies upon command and is a key component to escaping. However, beyond Hewie and some kicking, Fiona can’t do much.
The reason this sparks interest is, in today’s society, women do not like being portrayed as helpless. I’m not saying I agree with it either, but…in Fiona’s situation, I couldn’t imagine seeing her just go all whoop butt on everyone. I’m not sure how many women would be interested in playing this type of protagonist anymore.
The Verdict
As much as I would like to see this game get more love, and a more affordable way to play that isn’t emulation, I don’t believe it will ever happen. If the game has to change to be remade, then it won’t be Haunting Ground any longer, and that isn’t going to be right.
If you still have interest about the game, I do recommend checking out our review, and also, listen to the OST on YouTube, the music is very nice.
