Recently I wrote a blog about how a Haunting Ground remake would potentially do in 2023, and now, I plan to discuss a controversial Resident Evil 5 remake. How is the game controversial? Well…

Full on Action, no Horror
Back when RE5 hit the shelves in 2009, it fell into a weird spot. While the action in it was solid, the loss of the horror genre the series was known for hit hard for some people. Though I believe it has worked its way up the ranks in today’s world, a lot of fans weren’t happy.
So, in 2023, How Would it Do?
Although the game has been ported to the PS4, X1 and Nintendo Switch, the game has stayed consistent. There has not been an actual true remake, like (paid link) Resident Evil 4 received. Truthfully, it could benefit from some touch-ups.
A graphical upgrade is an obvious one, but let’s discuss controls for a second, because we now have the Dualsense. I wouldn’t be upset if the triggers allowed for alternate fire, much like (paid link) Returnal.
Resident Evil 4’s Success
Let’s face it, RE4 is not a horror game either. It is an action one, and even though not in the same lane as RE5, it does lack horror elements too. So after the success of RE4, I think it would be safe to say RE5 could do well too. In fact, it would be nice to give us all the DLC, and couch co-op as well.
Final Thoughts
While RE5 could still fall into some debate, since it is still an action game, I think it would go over well in 2023 since the initial shock of the turn in genre is gone. Fans have had time to adjust to this knowledge, and given that RE4 is also more action than horror, Capcom could definitely see a nice profit.
Edit: March 2026
This article was originally written in 2023, before the probability of Resident Evil 5 actually receiving a remake after we got Resident Evil Requiem on Steam, (paid links) Playstation 5, Xbox Series X & Nintendo Switch 2. We now know that (paid link) Resident Evil Code Veronica is getting a remake, which is exciting and that Resident Evil 5 has either been canceled or put on indefinite hold. These seem to be more rumors than confirmation but that’s the current status.
In the meantime, do check out my review for Requiem and as always, happy gaming!
