The first month of the year has come and gone, and with it another great round of pickups for me to sit and discuss with everyone. Without any delay, here are my January (24) game pickups.

Wii

Calling

I’ve owned this one before and sold it off. I never did get very far either, just enough to know it was something I was very interested in. I’m glad to have it back, and I’m also excited to finally experience it.

Switch

Ghost

This is a 2D metroidvania where you’re controlling a robot. I’ve only played about 5 minutes so that’s all I can say at this current moment.

Steam

House Flipper 2

I’ve spent a good deal of time with this game, especially for the first two weeks I had it. I’m roughly 16 hours in, and working on remodeling a home. I also moved my office to a nice log cabin type of house, which I love. I first was going to flip it, but I couldn’t bring myself to actually renovate the looks.

Lost Ruins

I actually took the plunge due to this post over at Ony’s Chaos Realm. After putting about 15 minutes into it, I can say the game has a nice difficulty to it. Im actually sad I haven’t put more time in. It’s a 2D side scrolling actual game.

God of Weapons

This is a different take on the roguelike genre. You start with an item box with very little storage. As you gain levels, you get to expand the item box and purchase new weapons or accessories. This means that you’ll eventually be managing the space in your case to ensure you can get the most use out of it.

The first time I played, I went 4 or 5 rounds and was still having a ton of fun with it. I like how much fresh air it breathes into the genre.

Haven Park

I got a gentle push to buy this one from Emily’s blog about the Steam Fall Sale. When I got a $20 gift card, and found the game on sale again, I thought why not? It’s supposed to be pretty relaxing and short.

PS4

Persona 5 Royal

I owned the base game when it released, and sunk 90 hours into it. Unfortunately I never beat it, but I thought I’d give it a second try with Royal. I know most of the new content isn’t until the 3rd semester, but I’m okay with that.

Catherine Full Body

I haven’t given this game a chance in years since the PS3 days, actually. I’ve already played a couple of nights, and I look forward to more. What stopped me the first time I played it was a specific puzzle, which I don’t even remember which one it was. The inclusion of a third character, a third storyline to explore, also has me very intrigued, beyond exploring the original story.

Tokyo Xanadu

This is actually the second time I’ve owned this game, and it’s the first time I’ll be playing it in years. I really enjoyed it before, which I played about 20 hours or so. It’s a decent JRPG and the characters are likable.

Wire Lips

I’ve already talked about this game a good deal already in my review, so I won’t stay here long. All I’ll say is I’ve beaten it, and if you want my opinions, check the other blog.

PVZ: Garden Warfare

I used to play this pretty often on the PS3 and have very fond memories. Given that I was on a different account and everything, I’ll be starting over, but I’m looking forward to it.

Croc’s World 1, 2 & 3

I honestly thought these looked adorable, and fun. I’ve played about 5 levels of the first game, and I was right. There’s also a nice challenge. These are 2D side scrolling platformers.

Croc’s World Run

This differs from the games mentioned above, as it is an auto runner and all you’re doing is jumping. I bought this game first, not really understanding it wasn’t the first Croc’s World, but it still isn’t a bad game. I’ve played a couple levels.

Spooky’s Jump Scare Mansion

I wasn’t aware that this game got a flat screen version on the PS4. This whole time I thought it was PSVR only, which is cool and all, but hooking that up at the current moment is nearly impossible. I’m glad to be able to play this, and I’m currently on floor 50. It’s not far, but it’s a decent start.

Happy’s Humble Burger Farm

I wasn’t expecting that I actually saw when I checked out this game. We run a burger joint, a restaurant, with a horror theme and the potential to die? Sign me up! Unfortunately, I haven’t started this one yet, mostly because I was all tied up with Wire Lips.

Monster Sanctuary

I know I already owned it, but I’ve gotten to the point that I really wish I had purchased certain games on Playstation instead of other systems, because trophies.

PS5

Persona 5 Tactica

There was a decent amount of hype going into this one. I’ve played for over two hours currently, and regardless of it being different, it’s been a fun ride. The story is at least interesting to me, and there’s decent comedy as well. Social links are not present, but that’s alright. This is a tactical game, and it works as such.

Frogo 1, 2 & 3

I’ve already talked about these games a good bit here, so check that out.

Army of Ruin

I’ve already talked about this game quite a bit in my review, and also in my double dipping blog, but I’ve actually thoroughly enjoyed just playing it again.

Stray Souls

I was following this game a few months prior to its release, and had put it on my wishlist. When I heard that the studio behind it was shutting down, I decided to snatch it up, because I was worried it would get delisted. I haven’t been able to try it yet, other than just a quick peak, but it might just be my next horror game…

Systems and Accessories

Playstation Portal

I really don’t want to get too into detail here, given that I’m currently working on a blog specifically about this system, but I’ll give a few opinions here.

I’ve used this for a few different games, most smaller indie titles, but it’s served me well and it has performed well too. Though, there have been a few mishaps, that I’ll wait and discuss in a different blog where I’ll be diving deeper into the system itself.

Sega Saturn Wireless Controller

This offered a great way to play my Saturn without the bother of a corded controller. That’s one aspect I have greatly loved about how gaming tech has changed over the years, wireless controllers.

Downs wrote a great blog about retro controllers, and it was through it that I chose this one. Retro-Bit has some great quality products, and they’re available on (paid link) Amazon, so super easy to get. Not to mention very affordable as well, since I only paid $35 for mine.

Final Words

Thanks for reading my January (24) game pickups, I hope you were able to find a new game for your library. I’m hoping to slim down on my pickups again, and get back to a more manageable monthly take in, since the past few months have been very large. With that said, please go check out December’s pickups if you haven’t already and I’ll see you all later.
