With the release of Pokemon Legends Z-A closing in on us later this year, I figured it was time to do a proper review for Pokemon Legends: Arceus. This game was very different than anything we had seen prior and it did so much for the series in different ways. If you don’t have a copy, remember to go treat yourself by buying the (paid link) game after you finish reading.

Story

You fall out of the sky after Arceus thrusts you back to the past. Upon awaking, the professor saves you and takes you back to a village where you’ll need to prove your worth to the Survey Corps by capturing Pokemon and completing the first ever Pokedex. From there, you’ll be faced with doubts, new friendships, hardships and plenty of Pokemon to chase and to be chased by.

Arceus has one of the best storylines I’ve seen from a Pokemon game in a long time. Sure, it has its weak points, but it’s easy to fall in love with what’s happening and the world they put you in.

Gameplay

This game is unlike anything we’ve seen before. Pokemon will literally attack you in the wild and damage your person. You’ll need to sneak, run and fight your way past them. Not all Pokemon are mean. Some will run away but they did a good job at really creating the scenery of Pokemon being unknown creatures.

Pokemon battle takes place in a more realistic way with players doing battle wherever the battle is. Snow? Got it. On a cliff? Yep. It also allows the player you walk around as the battle is taking place versus where we normally just stood still and did nothing.

Soundtrack

Legends: Arceus has one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard from a Pokemon game. From the frenzied battles to just exploration of the different locations, the soundtrack delivers a very peaceful feeling. I think it also fits the setting perfectly well. Very suitable for the time period.

Graphics

This was a step up, in my opinion. Even (paid links) Scarlet & Violet do not have as good of graphics as Legends Arceus does. This is a matter of opinion though and while it is true sometimes the game has moments of glitches with textures. It’s overall just very beautiful.

Controls

The controls for this game are pretty decent. They’re simple enough to understand and I do enjoy running around the Pokemon and avoiding their attacks.

Replayability

I would say Legends: Arceus has a very high replayability. I’ve already played through the game twice and started it a third time. You can also just keep playing the file you’ve already beaten to level up your Pokemon or just to explore an area for the fun of it.

Scores

Story: 7/10

Gameplay: 8/10

Soundtrack: 8/10

Graphics: 7/10

Controls: 8/10

Replayability: 8/10

Final Words

While some people may not have enjoyed the Pokdex aspect of the game, I think it was an interesting spin. The world they crafted stayed true to the time period they aimed for and it delivered a different type of story we hadn’t seen before in the series. If you haven’t played this, you should. Thanks for reading this Pokemon Legends: Arceus review.

Until next time.
