What a title, yeah? You’re probably curious to know what Digimon DS game fell into obscurity and well, I can’t say I’m too surprised by this information. It wasn’t a game that I hear anyone discuss and I’m the only person out of my friends who owns a copy. So what is it?

Digimon World Championship

Have you heard of it? No? Shocker. It was a spinoff title for the Nintendo DS that changed the formula again. Releasing in 2008, Digimon World Championship led us away from the turn based RPG genre we knew and replaced it with a creature training game instead. This wasn’t unheard of for Digimon though, since both (paid link) Digimon World & (paid link) Digimon World: Next Order also involved raising your Digimon partner(s). However, this game really took it to a different level.

The Story

If you can even call this game’s “story” an actualy story, you form a team of Digimon who go into tournaments for you. You’re actively trying to rise to the top, beating out your opponents for a higher status. With each win, you get closer to a promotion which can results in more habitats being opened, better equipment, your Digimon evolving to higher forms and more.

Recruiting Digimon

Unlike the other DS games, like (paid link) Dusk & (paid link) Dawn, Digimon World Championship actually changes out a scan system in favor of roping the Digimon in. I mean that literally too. You can buy better ropes in the shop, which you then go into a habitat on the world map, find a Digimon you want and draw a circle around it using the stylus. Then you have to drag the Digimon, with the stylus until it reaches zero HP. Then you can pick it up for your own team.

Digivovling

Digivolving your Digimon means you actively, most of the time, need to be training them. Look at the photo below for a better idea:

You can get different cage edits that will boost individual genes like Dragon, Beast, Machine and more that all contribute to Digivolving. Also, lots of battles. You absolutely have to participate in battles and have your Digimon have so many under their belt to achieve Digivolution.

Caring for Them

As I said, this game takes what the original Digimon World game did an up it. You’ll meed to clean up the messes made by your Digimon, make sure they eat plenty, heal them when they get injured, let them rest when hurt in battle and more. You constantly have to be paying attention to them in some shape or form.

Conclusion

Is this game of interest? You can find (paid link) loose copies for about $20-35 and (paid link) complete in box copies for $45 and up. I actually got Digimon World Championship not long after it was released. Even having to travel some distance to pick it up.

Make sure to check out our review for Digimon Story Time Stranger, which is available on Steam, (paid links) Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X. It is also coming to the (paid link) Switch and (paid link) Switch 2, which you can find out more information about that here.

Until next time, happy gaming!
