When you got your Christmas gifts not too long ago, what did you get? A new (paid link) PS5? A (paid link) Nintendo Switch 2? Maybe a (paid link) Xbox Series X? What if I told you I got an Atari. Yes, an Atari, in 2025, with HDMI hookups. Why, might you ask? Well, there’s a story to that and I’m going to tell you it. I’ll also tell you where to buy an Atari.
20(some) Years Ago
Let’s take a look back at my past, when I could still go to my grandparents house and we would play the NES and, you guessed it, the Atari! Now, I can’t tell you which version of the Atari we played back then, but I have fond memories of (paid links) Space Invaders, Jr. Pac-Man and Pitfall. These games were always a must back then but they weren’t as dominant in my life since I was still a kid and they were just relics of the past to me, not fully comprehending what they were beyond games on a screen. Which brings us to the next point.
10(some) Years Ago
When I was between 19 to 21 years old, I really had this urge to play some of these old titles again. Specifically Jr. Pac-Man and Pitfall. Now understanding gaming a bit more than I did before and having an actual passion for it, I was curious to try my hand at these once more. So we found the old system with the old RCA hookup, the games and I went forth.
Unfortunately this was short lived. Maybe a month after playing these games off and on, one of the cables messed up. Now we did try finding it but had no luck. At this point, I can’t even tell you which one specifically went out and then to boot, most TVs nowadays (or maybe all, I haven’t exactly checked) do not have a RCA plug.
Present Day
I found this Atari 2600+ system over on (paid link) Amazon that plays 2600 and 7800 games. I knew I had to have it. Well, we always do gifts for Christmas, so that ended up being my gift. I’m very thankful too because the ease of this machine is outmatched. All you need it a USB block to plug it into and an HDMI port on the TV. That’s it. I’ve been playing a bit of everything on it. I’ve been playing titles such of (paid link) Crystal Quest and (paid link) Super Circus, which were actually new releases for the system. Then I even bought (paid link) Joust, which has been a lot of fun.
Conclusion
I am sure there will be plenty more Atari discussion around here. I’m already thinking the reviews I want to write for some games. You’ll just have to stick around to see what all of those will be. Until next time though, just try to enjoy yourselves and as always, happy gaming.
