I am slowly but surely working my way through the Dead Space series. I did just review Dead Space 2 and now we will be going for Dead Space 3. It’s been a real treat to go through these games again, for the most part. Let’s talk about how this adventure went.
Story
Isaac is recruited by Earth Gov to go and find Ellie, who’s lost communication after being sent out on a mission. He’s joined by John Carver and Norton in space. After finding the space ship with Ellie and her team alive, they begin their work heading down to the game’s main attraction. The planet Tau Volantis which is believed to be the Marker’s home world. I don’t want to spoil everything here, because while the game may have changed a lot in its gameplay, which we will be talking about very soon, it did have a pretty interesting story. though to see it all, you’ll need to purchase the DLC, Awakened.
Gameplay
The gameplay is similar to the other two games and yet greatly different in some areas. These changes are not for the better either, I’m afraid. Dead Space took on a much more action packed theme this go around, which many were not and still are not happy with. Add in that they took away upgrade stations and the typical store to replace them with a suit kiosk and a tool bench.
With the tool bench, you’ll change up and mod your weapons. This means you can create a javelin gun with also has a contact beam on the bottom of it as a secondary fire. This isn’t an exact example but it’s the idea of what can be created. I personally wasn’t happy with this change up but at the same time, it all makes sense to the story.
This is a planet and part of space that is over 200 years old. Why would we find the latest technology like CEC Stores and normal upgraded benches? We wouldn’t. They changed them out to make room for the setting. Honestly, it isn’t even necessarily a horrible decision but it felt very different for what the series had been and that left a weird feeling.
Graphics
These are just a step up from what we had before and as they should be. I can’t say I noticed anything overly noticeable as far as a difference from Dead Space 2 to this game playing on the Steam Deck, but the frozen planet sure gives a lot to look at.
Soundtrack
I really did enjoy the soundtrack for this title. Although it wasn’t as good as the previous entries, mostly because there wasn’t any creepy music to go along with it, but they did a good job with what they had.
Controls
These are pretty solid. I cannot say as great as Dead Space 2, because something about them felt maybe a little off, but overall, they’re the same. Though watch if you start this game on your Steam Deck, make sure to check what control pattern it uses. Mine started with a user created one and it did not work for me at all.

Conclusion
While Dead Space 3 may have changed the course of the series, it is still a fun game to play and shouldn’t be overlooked. The story may have taken a different turn, but that doesn’t mean it was exactly a bad game. It just didn’t fit the series quite like we all hoped.
The DLC, Awakened, did try to correct this but that’s an article for a different day. For now, this ends our journey on the frozen planet and I must say, I actually do think I’ll miss it a little bit. Until next time, happy gaming.
