First Impressions:

I don’t know a lot about Shinobi Art of Vengeance, other than it’s in the same genre as Ninja Gaiden and other retrievable based games. I think it’s good that Sega is bringing back some of their dormant franchises. It gives them another chance to revive dead, dormant or forgotten franchises and bring them to the modern era.
Let’s break down what we saw in the trailer that was released today.

Graphics:

The first thing that caught my attention was the art style. It was 2D, but extremely polished. The actions of the protagonist seemed fluid and lightning fast. The trailer gave an overview of the game features and it showed vibrant environments, as well as visceral combat that made each enemy encounter intense.

Gameplay:

Graphics may catch my attention first, but gameplay is what hooks you in. Ultimately, we have to ask, does this look fun to play? And if so, why? The combat was slick, with fast attacks and a variety of other skills to evade or go for to for with enemies. If I’m playing a game that laid down the foundation for other metroidvanias, I want to be immersed into the combat enough where I don’t allow the enemy to get an edge. I realize there will be other enemies in the mix, but it’s good to actively learn through fighting which tactics work best.

Final Thoughts

Shinobi has a lot of potential to bring the dormant IP to this era and carve out something new. I hope all console and computer platforms take advantage of this release soon. We want to play new games, but we also want to see what this offers to push the genre forward.

I will give Shinobi Art of Vengeance a try. And if everything works out, we will have another hit on our hands. Every game that releases has the chance to impact video games overall, and what better way to accomplish that than to bring back a forgotten franchise.
