Oh look, another roguelike. Is that all I play anymore? It feels like it. Moving on though, this time I’ll be talking about King Krieg Survivors and if it’s worth playing. Let’s hop in.

Gameplay

The gameplay for this game is similar and yet different. It also is simplistic and yet, there aren’t exactly clear instructions. You start off with a single room you can go into where hordes of enemies attack you. You’ll survive as long as you can, with each wave offering you different perks. Such as the 2nd wave puts a wizard on the map who grants you one spell, and then wave 6 will give you a merchant who can sell you food that will up certain attributes of your character.

As you kill monsters, you’ll gain experience, gold and currency. The experience helps you level up, and choose stat upgrades, and it also acts as your currency outside of stages to do upgrades to your stats overall. The gold let’s you buy buffs in the stages from a merchant.

There’s also Ruins obtained through hitting achievements in the game, which offers different advantages when equipped. You could also purchase skills from the wizard outside of the stages, but I never could understand how those specifically work. The game lacks information unfortunately.

Graphics

These feel pretty bare bones, and not anything to care for. Yeah, monster designs are alright, but they aren’t special. The spells look alright, and are the best looking out of everything. Even that though isn’t saying too much.

Music

I tried listening to this a bit while I played. They aren’t anything special either, and the sounds get annoying fast. Definitely would recommend throwing on some music, a podcast or a YouTube video as you play and mute the game.

Controls

Honestly, they’re the exact same as all other roguelike auto shooters, for the most part. They are a bit in reverse though. B is to interact while A is to confirm. Other than that, all you’re doing is walking around and selecting level up upgrades and such when prompted.

Replayability

Yeah, there really isn’t much here. I’ve cleared the 5 rooms the game has available, and I’m done with it. All I could do is go back to get more money to unlock other artifacts or do upgrades, but I don’t want to. Overall, when you’re done with one, you’re more than likely just done with it overall. It isn’t like Vampire Survivors where the replay value is pretty high.

Scores

Gameplay: 6/10

Graphics 5/10

Music 4/10

Controls: 5/10

Replayablity: 1/10

Overall:

King Krieg score

Conclusion

While King Krieg might be an alright roguelike if you’re just looking for one to play, it’s definitely at the bottom of my list. While it isn’t awful, and isn’t riddled with bugs, it leaves a lot to be desired. The fact that choosing different skills doesn’t seem to do much really is unfortunate to itself.

Still, here’s the game if you want to see it for yourselves. It is also worth mentioning it is on Steam as well.

I’m not saying I don’t like it to some degree, but it doesn’t last long. It isn’t like Monster Panic, which I am still occasionally visiting in between different games. So, overall, maybe just purchase this if you’re running out of other ones to play.
