That’s a bold statement, isn’t it? With all these other great animes out there, why should SAO still be my #1? Well, I have a few reasons, and we’re going to dive into them all.
The SAO Story
If you somehow have not seen SAO before, the actual Sword Art Online Arc is only 14 episodes long. The rest of the series is filled with other adventures that take place after it. Though I believe the arcs are hit or miss overall, the real lore and story of SAO is what keeps bringing me back. Being someone who loves video games and virtual reality games as well, I can imagine, in a sense, how it would work for them. It’s also worthy to mention that I love RPGs, so SAO would have been something I would play.
(Not the actual real SAO titles we have, I play those too but just to clarify.)
The Trauma
Being a part of Sword Art Online clearly left scars on its players. This is shown at different points throughout the series. The GGO Arc has to be my favorite when it comes to that specific topic. Kirito struggles with what he did in SAO, and now he is fighting a former Laughing Coffin member.
The Movies
Setting aside what has happened in the show itself, we then have the movies. Though the first one is more of a special to me than an actual movie, Ordinal Scale was pretty epic, and then came the Progressive movies. These follow the (paid links) manga and light novels by the same name, which both are a retelling of the events from SAO.
In the first movie, it focuses more on Asuna’s time in Sword Art Online leading up to the first boss. The books are a bit different, but I can’t comment on them yet.
Conclusion
While SAO might fall under controversy or did, I still find it fun to go back and see. Although not every Arc is absolutely amazing, you can pick and choose which ones to watch. There are plenty of other animes that I enjoy, but this is the one I find myself going back to.
