Surprise, surprise, this very Book Friday blog is in the horror genre. Though I feel I haven’t gotten into heavy until the last couple years, I’ve also liked the creepy and spooky, like R.L. Stine and other supernatural books from Mary Downing Hahn for example. Today though, I’d like to specifically focus on books for Halloween.
Without any further discussion, though, let’s hop straight into it.
Inheriting Her Ghosts by S.H. Cooper
Synopsis:

Found this one not too long after it was published and was taken away by the author’s writing. It’s very much what I’d expect out of a 19th or 20th century writer, which is in no way a bad thing. She has a fluent writing style that is really very beautiful, and the story is very interesting. It was a page turner that I didn’t want to set down. I actually read a majority of this on a plane ride. I recently posted a review for this too, if anyone is interested.
Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes
Synopsis:
“Claire Kovalik is days away from being unemployed—made obsolete—when her beacon repair crew picks up a strange distress signal. With nothing to lose and no desire to return to Earth, Claire and her team decide to investigate.
What they find is shocking: the Aurora, a famous luxury spaceliner that vanished on its maiden tour of the solar system more than twenty years ago. A salvage claim like this could set Claire and her crew up for life. But a quick search of the ship reveals something isn’t right.

When I stumbled upon this, I was quite taken with the idea. Sure we have had horror in space before, especially in movies and games, but books? Yeah, they probably exist, but a part of this greatly reminded me of Dead Space, and that was a huge selling point for me.
For a majority of the book, it keeps the atmosphere and story cranked up. Abandoned ship, tons of dead bodies, and why? What made it all happen? Well, I won’t spoil that bit, but it wasn’t what I expected. Though the book is a really nice read, it does drop the ball towards the end. I love it anyway, because it wasn’t a bad ending, it was just not what I had hoped for.
This isn’t to say the book isn’t worth reading, because it absolutely is. I know I’ll be going back to it at some point.
The First Horror by R.L. Stine
Synopsis:
“Twin sisters Cally and Kody Fraiser aren’t thrilled that their family has moved to Fear Street. They’ve heard the strange stories. They know about the centuries of nightmarish terror. But what they don’t know is that they’ve moved into the one house that even their neighbors on Fear Street are afraid to enter. The house that has stood mysteriously empty for the past thirty years. They moved to 99 Fear Street.
Now they must learn the secret of 99 Fear Street or they will become the next victims of the house of evil.”
I first read this book during my middle school days, and it became a personal favorite pretty quickly. Although the sequels are also worth a read, this specific entry is the best, in my opinion.
Final Thoughts
