That spooky season is just around the corner, can you feel it in the air? I surely can, and it makes me want to play some scary games. Those games that really stick with you, that give you the chills as you play them. That’s why today, I want to bring you a list of horror games for Halloween.
Some of these I’ve covered here on the site, either in different blogs like this one or reviews. However, I promise you’ll see other games you have not seen me cover. I strongly encourage everyone to read all the way through.
Eternal Darkness
I cannot explain how gruesome, mind screwing and downright scary this game can be. Although it is a GameCube game, it was the first ever game to introduce the sanity meter. That was a big deal, and it is still the best one I’ve seen done to this day.
When your sanity levels got low, the game loved to mess with you. This happened in a variety of ways, such as deleting your save file or turning your TV off. Also, having your character suddenly cut in half, walk towards the screen, and splatter blood all over it.
How it differs compared to other games after it with a sanity meter is that it allows for combat. Other games, such as Amnesia where you had to sneak around, Eternal Darkness wanted you to fight. It actually didn’t leave you a choice.
The story is as follows:
Alex receives word that her uncle has died, and now she must come to confirm his identity. After arriving at his mansion and doing so, there’s just something that feels off to her. She begins to snoop around her uncle’s estate, and in doing so, she stumbles upon a book that will be the focal point of the game.
The Tome of Eternal Darkness.
Upon finding the book, the journey takes a jump into the past, and the real frights begin. The game is a mixup of the present and the past, outlining the individuals who came into contact with the Tome before Alex, and her personal journey with it too.
This makes an excellent chilling adventure and why it is among these games for Halloween.
The Haunted Mansion
This one might be a surprise to people, and I wouldn’t blame them. I’m sure the movie with Eddy Murphy comes to mind when you read the name, as it should. What would your reaction be if I told you there was a video game that went along with that? Maybe that isn’t too surprising, but it gets there when the realization hits that the movie and game have very little in common.
Makes sense right? It didn’t to me either as a child, but it made for a pretty spooky experience. Corridors are dark and creepy, with the right music to make you on edge. The character, Zeke, has just a lantern to get rid of spirits and collect their souls.
Can he cleanse the house of the dead while not dying himself? That’s where we, the player, come in.
Fatal Frame II
My favorite horror game had to make an appearance on this list, for good reason. The series is known for creepy locations, and I cannot think of a better entry that had a scarier place to explore, a more eerie soundtrack and an atmosphere so thick and dark that just walking a few steps made me so concerned for my (character’s) life.
This one also has the best story, in my opinion, as well. Honestly, there’s not a way to really go wrong with this game, but if you want more detail, then head over to my review and check it out.
Luigi’s Mansion
This is probably a very obvious popular choice, so I’m going to just skim over this section. This game is great for any time of the year, but Halloween is perfect. It’s light hearted spooks mixed with the personalities of the ghosts make this game a very easy go to.
Now I personally would recommend the GameCube version over the 3DS’ just because I enjoy it on a big screen more, plus if you see a side by side, the graphics look better. That could be more my own thoughts, but I’ll stand by it.
Dead Space
If you want something with some action that still delivers in the scare factor, (paid link) Dead Space is still a viable choice. From the dark corridors of the Ishimura to the Necromorphs that pop out of nowhere, there is plenty to give you nightmares.
One of my favorite moments is in chapter 1 when you have to backtrack. The area you’re traveling through was just walked in, and yet, there’s a random dead Necromorph. Only…it isn’t dead, and when you get near, it jumps up very quickly and starts attacking.
The game has plenty more moments in similar fashion to what I just described. If you’re interested, I recommend checking out my review for this one as well.
Home Sweet Home
You play as a husband who finds your wife just standing there. As you approach her, you realize something is very wrong, and the chase begins.
I played about 2 or 3 hours of this game on the original PSVR, and it really did freak me out. You couldn’t fight, you had to run and hide. This led to a few difficult situations, at the very start of the game even. She makes this weird clicking noise as she gets closer, so they give you a way to kind of understand where she is, but she runs so fast if she sees you.
Conclusion
There are several games that could fit this list, such as Dementium or the most popular titles like (paid link) Resident Evil or Silent Hill. However, these are just my personal picks for the season.
