The Made Up Language of Gravity Rush

I recently started playing Gravity Rush on the (paid link) Vita again. I’m pretty excited, considering it has been nearly 10 years. I remember the city to an extent and I’m thinking about how much fun I’ll have. Then, the talking begins. At first, I thought Japanese but then, French. Well, if you don’t know, it’s neither.

French nor Japanese, it is Gibberish

Alright it really isn’t gibberish, but it also isn’t a real language. If you do research, like I did, you’ll see it actually is a gross between both languages I mentioned above. Neat, isn’t it? However, let’s dive slightly deeper.

Why a Crossover?

Okay, so we know it’s a cross between Japanese and French but why? Well, I did research for that too. Unfortunately, there is not a definite reasoning I can find, nothing concrete I can link us too. I did hear this however:

“Game creator Keiichiro Toyama noted that Japanese dubs of French films often sounded natural, leading to a French-influenced sound.”

YouTube

Now, unfortunately I cannot verify this statement but it at least does make sense. With that said, what’s the history of Gravity Rush itself?

Gravity Rush’s History

Gravity Rush released in 2012 (NA) for the Playstation Vita. It made good use of the Vita’s gyro controls and touch screen, offering players a unique experience. Even as I’m playing now, I forget just how interesting they made the game like this. The game was later remastered for the (paid link) PS4 in 2016, which I also own, but it lost some of the uniqueness the original version carried, in my opinion. In 2017, we received (paid link) Gravity Rush 2 but that’s a topic for a different day.

Conclusion

So, what did you make of the language of Gravity Rush when you began? What language did you first think it was? Tell us over on our Facebook page and check out this article I wrote about the first couple Vita games I re-bought. Also, if you can’t find your total playtime, I wrote an article detailing why.

Until next time, happy gaming!
