Thanks for returning to yet another Pokemon post. This time, we’ll be covering Pokemon Legends Z-A’s Mega Evolution. When does it start, what Pokemon can you get right away and how useful is it? Let’s break it down.

When?

Mega Evolution is unlocked after main mission #9, which has you battle a rogue Mega Evolved Absol with a Mega Lucario you borrow from A-Z. Interesting enough yet? The battle is actually pretty fun and also a challenge. You have to attack the Pokemon until it drops orbs, which help charge your Mega orb, located at the bottom right of your screen.

Once charged, you can click the right analog stick in to activate Mega Evolution. When a Pokemon is in this state, all of their moves are used as Plus moves, which do added damage and are a necessity in these fights. Once you take down Mega Absol, you return Lucario but gain the Absolite and even the Absol itself.

After the fight, you unlock Mega Evolution for any Pokemon you have the Mega Stone for. Which brings us to the next topic.

Who’s Available?

To answer this simply, a ton of Pokemon. To give a more detailed explanation, here are some the Pokemon Mega Stones you can get a right away by either buying them at the Stone Emporium or trading in Mega Shards at Quasartico Inc for them:

Lopunnite

Pidgeotite

Sablenite

Gyaradosite

Lucarionite

These are just some of the stones available.

How Useful is Mega Evolution?

So, as this is the first entry in years that Mega Evolution made a comeback, but begs the question of just how useful is it? Well, extremely! It always has been in the 3DS days, but now it’s a different story in this game.

Since the combat is different, so is Mega Evolution. First of all, you can have more than one Mega Evolution occur during the same battle, in comparison to how it was limited. This opens up to new strategies.

Also, I mentioned this above but it also helps when fighting rogue Mega Evolved Pokemon. You can really work with several type advantage Pokemon and make quick work of them.

Conclusion

Have you already bought Z-A? If not, go grab you a (paid links) Switch or Switch 2 copy today! It’s been a fun ride. If you’re curious about when the game opens up, I got you covered along with some tips! Until next time, happy gaming.

  1. […] Mega Evolution has to be a part of this section. It’s just so nice to have it back with even new Pokemon. […]

  2. […] Mega Evolution makes things even more tilted. Stats still follow the usual tiers, so powerful Pokémon with Mega Evolutions like Tyranitar, Dragonite, and Lucario become overpowered very quickly. They are available much earlier than expected and dominate most encounters. It feels like Mega Evolution makes the strong even stronger without offering any real balancing factors. […]
