Every once in a while I get the urge to play a Tetris game, and even though I am currently still playing (paid link) Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 on the (paid link) Switch 2, I wanted to experience this game again and do a review for it. I’ve played Tetris Effect prior by playing on the Playstation VR & the (paid link) Meta Quest, so playing it on handheld was a different, yet very fun, way to play.
Let’s hop into this review, shall we?
Gameplay
This is the same great classic Tetris gameplay that we all know and still enjoy at its core. What Tetris Effect does differently are the modes. You have the Journey, which is a set of different stages connected into areas and you see how you score at the end of each set. There’s a beginner, normal and hard mode for each varying skill level of the player and you can always go back and try again for a better score. If you want to challenge yourself, there are modes for that too under Effect Modes. Then you have multiplayer.
Graphics
Tetris has never been a graphically demanding game nor is it about the graphics period when it comes to titles like this. However, that didn’t stop the development team from creating these amazing visuals to enjoy as you clear lines and have your fun. From dolphins in the background, visuals of fire and water and a nice calming rain forest, this game always has some unique area to admire as you play.
Soundtrack
This definitely has the best soundtrack of any Tetris game, in my opinion. You can find a playlist of the songs here, which I highly recommend. They do a great job of really setting the tone of the level with the visuals and music combined.
Controls
These can be remapped to fit your needs so I’ll give them a pass. At first, it was a bit annoying because I couldn’t move the pieces with the analog stick, just the d pad, which I wasn’t finding very comfortable personally.
Replayability
Being that this specific Tetris entry has so many different modes and challenges, it has a very high replay value that will keep you coming back to challenge your own high score or play with friends.

Conclusion
Tetris Effect is a great way to play by yourself or with your friends. Do you like competition? Want to just relax for a few levels? I feel there is a bit of everything for everyone in this title and if you decide to purchase, I hope you enjoy it as well. As always, happy gaming.
